Pre-Kindergarten (School Readiness) 3 to 5 Years

Overview

The Cleverminds School Readiness Program sets a strong foundation for academic excellence throughout schooling. Students who’ve consistently attended our school readiness tutoring have demonstrated above grade results from kindergarten.

The school readiness program focuses on aspects necessary to become fluent in Literacy and Numeracy. Derived from NSW syllabus outcomes, the content taught is:

Literacy

• Name writing on lines with correct letter formation
• Upper- and lower-case letter identification, phonics and letter formation
• Initial sound matching
• CVC spelling
• Sight word recognition
• Reading short sentences and phrases
• Writing simple sentences
• Expressing oneself confidently through speaking and vocabulary expansion
• Comprehension

Mathematics

• Number identification, number formation
• Counting strategies
• Matching numbers to quantities
• Understanding the concept of zero
• Adding and subtracting quantities up to 10
• Grouping and sharing using hands on objects
• Identifying, comparing, and ordering objects according to length (longest to shortest), mass (lightest to heaviest), and volume (full, empty, half-full/half-empty)
• Creating and describing patterns
• Beginning knowledge of fractions
• Days, months, weather patterns
• Telling the o’clock time

As part of our school readiness program, students will receive homework weekly based on their English and Math topics.

Physical Development

• Correct pencil grip
• Holding scissors correctly
• Colouring in the lines
• Forming letter and numbers correctly
• Simple drawing skills
• Listening to and following instructions
• Moving safely around students, classroom and play areas
• Sitting in groups at desks and floor

Personal, Social and Emotional Well-being

• Understanding and following class rules and expectations
• Learning that it’s okay to make mistakes, that’s how we learn
• Recognising and expressing feelings of self and others
• Engaging in positive behaviours such as turn taking, sharing and helping others
• Understanding and respecting the similarities and differences between peers
