OC Classes
Yes we offer OC class!
At Cleverminds we care about our students. Prior to entering into our OC program we will take your child through some of the intense and competitive assessments processors that make up the OC process.
Rest assured you will be given the best advice and we will take every step to make sure your child has the best chance at scoring a spot.
Below is a step-by-step guide to the Opportunity Class (OC) process. The Opportunity Class program is designed to provide academically gifted and talented students with enriched educational opportunities in New South Wales, Australia. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the entire OC journey, from application to acceptance, ensuring you are well-informed, equipped and ready to support your child’s academic growth during this challenging journey.
Step 1: Understanding the Opportunity Class Program
Before diving into the application process, it’s crucial to have a clear understanding of what the OC program entails. Opportunity Classes are offered to students in Year 5 and are designed to challenge and nurture gifted students. These classes provide specialized learning environments to encourage academic excellence, critical thinking, and creativity.
Step 2: Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the OC program, students must meet certain criteria. The primary eligibility factor is a demonstrated high level of academic ability. The selection process involves using a combination of school assessments and external tests, such as the Opportunity Class Placement Test.
Step 3: Registering for the Opportunity Class Placement Test
To apply for the OC program, parents must register their child for the Opportunity Class Placement Test. Registration usually opens in the first half of the school year when students are in Year 4. Parents can obtain registration information from their child’s current school or the New South Wales Department of Education website. It is also best to have the OC set up and your chid enrolled by the beginning of year 3.
Step 4: Preparing for the Placement Test
Preparation is key to succeeding in the Placement Test. Encourage your child to practice sample questions and familiarize themselves with the test format. Complete all the additional training provided to support and encourage study environments and boost your child’s confidence.
Step 5: Taking the Opportunity Class Placement Test and Post Test
The Placement Test typically takes place in mid-year when students are in Year 4. It consists of sections covering reading, mathematics, and general ability. The test is designed to assess a student’s academic aptitude and potential for success in the OC program.
Step 6: Receiving Test Results
After the test, parents will receive their child’s results, which include a raw score and a percentile rank. These results will help you determine how well your child performed compared to other students who took the test.
Step 7: Application Process
Using the test results and additional information, parents must complete an application form, which lists their preferred Opportunity Class schools. The Department of Education will then consider the test results, school assessments, and other relevant factors when making offers.
Step 8: Receiving the Offer
Offers for placement in Opportunity Classes are usually sent out in the later part of the year. If your child receives an offer, congratulations! You’ll receive information about the enrolment process and the school they’ll attend.
Step 9: Enrolling in the Opportunity Class
Once you’ve accepted the offer, it’s time to complete the enrolment process. The new school will provide you with all the necessary information and support to ensure a smooth transition for your child.
Step 10: Embracing the Opportunity Class Experience
Finally, support your child during their OC journey. Encourage them to embrace the opportunities for growth, challenge, and achievement that the Opportunity Class program provides. Communicate with teachers regularly and stay involved in your child’s education.
Conclusion:
The Opportunity Class process can be both exciting and challenging for parents and students alike. By following this step-by-step guide and offering support and encouragement throughout the journey, you can help your child excel academically and make the most of this unique opportunity. Remember that every child is unique, and no matter the outcome, your support and involvement in their education are invaluable.
